ISLAMABAD: Presiding officer has announced after counting votes that Mamnoon Hussain will be the 12th President of Pakistan, unofficial reports.
Presiding Officer announced the winning of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) nominated Mamnoon Hussain as 12th President of Pakistan for next 5 years.
Official announcement will be made at 5:00pm today by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim.
PML-N Mamnoon Hussain secured 379 votes from electoral college while his only opponent Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI)’s candidate Justice (Retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed got 73 votes.
In National Assembly, PML-N candidates secured 277 votes and Wajihddin got 34 while 3 votes were rejected due to double marking.
In Punjab provincial assembly, 313 votes secured by Mamnoon Hussain and 24 by PTI’s Wajihuddin while 2 votes were rejected due to double marking.
In Sindh provincial assembly, Mamnoon Hussain secured 64 votes and Wajihuddin got 5 votes from total of 69 votes.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly, Mamnoon Hussain got 41 votes and Wajihuddin secured 69
In Balochistan provincial assembly, PML-N’s candidates successful to secure 55 votes and PTI’s candidates got only one.
Polling commenced across Pakistan on Tuesday at 10:00am to elect Pakistan’s new president as the members of electoral colleges arrived in their Houses while the ending time was 3:00pm.
Strict security arrangements has been made in place of the Senate, the National Assembly, the four provincial assemblies.
Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim also visited the NA while the poll was underway.
The election is proceeding through secret ballot as Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim told the parliamentarians to ensure secrecy of ballot paper while marking the name of the selected candidate.
Moreover, legislators were restricted to carry mobile phones or prohibited to take snap of ballot paper within the premises during the electoral process.
However, ECP is conducting the presidential poll in a tensed atmosphere as reservations found between some political parties after schedule modification by the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC).
Pakistan highest mandate holding party, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) filed nomination paper of Mamnoon Hussain from its side while the country’s third largest elected party, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) will compete the only opponent by its candidate Justice (Retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed.
Second largest elected and main opposition party, Pakistan Peoples Party announced to boycott the election as they considered the schedule change by SC is inappropriate.
Both upper, lower houses of parliament and four provincial assemblies are including in the electoral college for the presidential election.
ECP completed the delivering process of ballot papers earlier to parliament house in Islamabad and provincial assemblies of Sindh‚ Balochistan‚ Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
ECP has notified that results of the presidential election, to be held tomorrow, will be announced on the same day.
During general elections, held on May 11 this year, political parties had alleged that ECP got failed in performing its duties. The delayed results had raised concerns on transparency of polls.
According to ECP officials, registrars of all high courts of the country have been sent a letter asking to make arrangements so that results could be announced on the same day.
