NEW YORK: A new study suggests that people with left-brain dominance tend to listen to their mobile phones with their right ear, and vice-versa.
According to a report in HealthDay News on Friday, 95 percent of the human population is left-brain dominant, and those people tend to be right-handed. The dominant side of your brain is where your speech and language center is located.
In new research from the Henry Ford Health System in West Bloomfield, Michigan, researchers found that roughly 70 percent of 700 people surveyed held their mobile phone up to the ear that was on the same side as their dominant hand.
Researchers say that the study could help physicians quickly locate a patient’s language center before brain surgery. “In essence, this could be used as a poor man’s Wada test,” study author Dr. Michael Seidman told HealthDay News.
A standard test that determines exactly where a surgical patient’s language center is located, the Wada test is critical “if you want to carefully preserve a person’s language abilities,” he added. But it’s invasive and risky, and while not providing a foolproof guarantee, looking at how a person uses his or her mobile phone can give a doctor “shorthand insight into brain dominance,” he said.
Findings are published in the May issue of the journal JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.
Of those surveyed, 90 percent were right-handed, and 68 percent of them used their right ear, 25 percent used their left ear and 7 percent used both ears, according to HealthDay News. Among the lefties, 72 percent used their left ear, 23 percent used their right ear and 5 percent used both ears.
