NEW YORK: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could not tolerate a new caffeinated gum by Wrigley’s . FDA administration says it will examine what affect added caffeine leaves on children and teens.
This story started when Alert Energy Caffeine Gum was introduced this week by Mars Inc.’s which is a Wrigley division. Later on it was revealed that even One piece of gum contains 40 milligrams of caffeine,.
So it was like having a half a cup of coffee and this caffeine is released into your saliva when you chew the gum and you may easily swallow it as if you were drinking coffee or a soda whereas some is absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
People say FDA had once approved such added Caffeine but FDA says it was fifty years ago when there were different factors. Michael Taylor, the agency’s deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine, in a statement on Monday said.
“Today, the environment has changed. Children and adolescents may be exposed to caffeine beyond those foods in which caffeine is naturally found and beyond anything FDA envisioned when it made the determination regarding caffeine in cola,” Taylor says.
“For that reason, FDA is taking a fresh look at the potential impact that the totality of new and easy sources of caffeine may have on the health of children and adolescents, and if necessary, will take appropriate action.”
