Though Sony is putting all of its material and technological excellence into upcoming gaming console, PlayStation 4 or PS4, it has fears, whether from Xbox 720 or something else, regarding huge selling of the console.
This fear has made the gaming giant from Japan to opt a bit cheaper hardware as compared to PlayStation 3, says a report on VG24/7.
The site has quoted EA executive Ben Cousin, who is also a former Battlefield producer, saying the PS4 has been developed using cheaper hardware due to fear of a smaller install base.
Ben himself working on a tablet focused game, The Drowning, as he feels that tablet space has enough room to grow along with free-to-play titles.
“I think the problem with the console model and certainly with the previous generation was that it needed the ultra-hardcore, the kids, and those kind of mid-core or whatever you it call it, mainstream gamers, to a buy a console in order to make a profit because it just needed massive volume,” the VG 27/7 further quoted him as saying.
Lauding Sony’s early adaptation to this trend, Ben said that this realization had compelled the Japanese tech giant to use cheaper hardware ‘than it did with PS3.’
In Ben’s view, decision of using cheaper hardware might be taken on two grounds:
1. A defensive move fearing lesser install base as compared to PS3 in given trends
2. A temptation for quick profit due to financial instability
