Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) have criticized the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decision to include an empty slot in the list of candidates on ballot papers for the coming elections.
Criticizing the ECP‘s decision on Wednesday, PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif said that giving an empty slot in the ballot paper was not in favour of democracy.
“Why a person who doesn’t want to cast his vote would turn up to a polling station,” he said adding that the ECP should reconsider its decision before the printing of ballot papers.
He further urged people to come out in large numbers during the elections in order to elect their representatives who had the mission to serve the nation.
“Abstention in voting is a crime in civilized societies,” he added.
Meanwhile, the PTI spokesman termed the ECP’s decision to give an empty slot in the ballot papers as meaningless and said that the commission should reconsider its decision.
