MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA: Billions of dollars are needed to observe Asteroids activity in the orbit to save earth from damaging events like happened in Russia last month.
The meteor that exploded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk without warning on February 15 this year, had damaged hundreds of buildings and wounded more than 1,000 people. The incident was caused by a space rock about 50 feet (15 meters) wide, researchers said.
Fireballs like Asteroids cost Russia 30 million dollar damage making thousands of people living in fear.
The B612 Foundation in MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA is working on an Infrared technology based Telescope which will be placed in the orbit. The Sentinel telescope’s, the proposed device, budget is around 450 million U.S. Dollar.
“The telescope would be capable of observing all objects which would come toward earth” said sources related to the project.
Current telescope, used to analyze risk, has been providing “Last minute warning” but this isn’t sufficient for making protective measures. This is the reason behind the idea of creating new telescope.
“Human beings can solve any technical problems that are put in front of us,” said Daniel Durda, senior planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., and an expert on asteroid collisions. “It’s the social and political issues that we struggle with.” Rusty Schweickart, former NASA astronaut and founding member of the B612 Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the Earth from asteroid strikes, concurred: “The geopolitical realities are daunting. The technical issues are easy by comparison.”
