New Delhi: Pakistani players have been removed from the Hockey India League (HIL) following the alleged killings of Indian soldiers and protests by the country’s extremist political party Shiv Sena.
However, Hockey India said that it would give fees to nine Pakistani players according to the contract.
India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the country’s relations with Pakistan cannot become as they were in the past.
Earlier, after the latest outbreak of violence in disputed Kashmir, around 100 Shiv Sena workers protested at a stadium where the Mumbai Magicians team, who have four Pakistani players in their squad, were practising.
Rashid Mehmood, Fareed Ahmed, Imran Butt and Mohammad Tauseeq are the four players in the Mumbai team, while the other five are Mohammed Rizwan Jr., Mohammed Rizwan Sr (Delhi Wave Riders), Kashif Shah (Punjab Warriors), Muhammed Irfan and Shafqat Rasool (Ranchi Rhinos).
