Islamabad: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari is considering leaving the post of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairmanship amid pressure from Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) to retain only one post either as president or party co-chairman.
After SC verdict in Asghar Khan case, it would be difficult for the president to smoothly run the election campaign of PPP in the next elections. Therefore, he has decided to resign as PPP co-chairman.
Although the president will show that he had distanced himself from the party but he would continue to run the affairs of the party through his son and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
“Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will be the triumph card for PPP in next election,” they said adding that presence of Bilawal in Karachi during last two months was the sign that he would be the face of the party in the next elections.
The sources further revealed that former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani is the most favourite contender to replace the incumbent co-chairman.
“President is consulting over the issue with legal experts and senior leadership in the party.”
President Zardari will make the important announcements on the eve of 5th death anniversary of the slain PPP leader and wife of President Asif Zardari, Benazir Bhutto at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh.
