Tel Aviv: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fearing Syria’s chemical weapons fall into the hands of Islamist rebels, said on Tuesday Israel is having a close look and tracking developments concerning the chemical weapons.
“Along with the international community, we are closely following developments in Syria related to its chemical weapons stockpiles,” foreign news agency quotes Netanyahu in a statement from his office.
Israeli Premier Netanyahu said that I heard President Obama’s important remarks on the subject and we see things the same way. “We believe these weapons must not be used and must not fall into the hands of terrorist elements.”
Earlier on Monday, U.S. President Barack Obama warned Syria’s embattled President Bashar al-Assad against using the chemical weapons in the country’s uprising.
Meanwhile, Western powers on Tuesday warned the regime of an immediate reaction if they use chemical weapons.
On the other hand, Russia, the front ally of the Assad regime, has dismissed fears of Damascus using chemical weapons and warned that deploying the missiles risked pouring more arms into the region.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 41,000 people have been killed so far in the Syrian conflict.
The conflict which erupted in March 2011 has now been transformed into an armed insurgency to establish an Islamic State.
