Islamabad: The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded three senior Government of Pakistan officials to participate in the 15th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC). The IACC focused on mobilizing and connecting agents of change to ensure that demands for greater transparency and accountability lead to sustainable changes.
Official Press Release of Training for Pakistan stated that “The United States is committed to fighting corruption and to promote good, open, and accountable governance for the 21st century.”
USAID through its Training for Pakistan Project selected participants holding important positions in the government and currently engaged at policy and implementation level for promoting corruption free environment. These delegates attended the 4-day Anti-Corruption Conference in Brazil held from 7 to10 November, 2012. More than 1,900 people from 140 countries gathered in Brazil to discuss the pressing issue of corruption and its impact on a society. The platform gave the participants a chance to share experiences, devise new ways for greater transparency and accountability, and learn innovative means to promote corruption free work environment in public sector.
“Such exposure trips instill the importance of fighting corruption in the public sector functionaries and that eventually will lead to development of a stronger governance system in Pakistan. It is a positive step towards eliminating corruption, such as bribery and fraud, and its widespread impact on people’s everyday lives,” said Joseph Ghanem, Chief of Party of USAID Training for Pakistan Project.
The conference featured work streams on ending impunity; promoting green and clean governance; restoring trust in the financial sector; preventing corruption in sports; ensuring stable and transparent governments during political transitions; and collectively shaping the global governance agenda. The conference exposed the participants to some of the best practices and success stories from around the world and helped the participants learn about developing legal and regulatory reforms at the federal and provincial levels ensuring a corruption free governance model.
“Attending 15th International Anti-Corruption Conference was an extremely stimulating experience. It is imperative for the government to restore people’s trust and build the credibility of institutions. I am thankful to USAID for connecting us with likeminded public servants from around the world and learn from each other about corruption free governance systems. There is an urgent need for us to work together towards transparent and accountable institutions and processes and ensure cleaner, healthier and fairer systems in Pakistan.” Nazrat Bashir, Managing Director, Public Procurement Regulatory Authority shared hile speaking at the debriefing session.
This initiative was part of the United States commitment to the Government of Pakistan to strengthen democracy and governance. USAID is working to reduce corruption through public sector reform and by educating people in power about their roles in preventing corruption.
