New Delhi: Leaders of the business community have stressed the need to tap energy potential in South Asia, and termed it imperative for growth and economic revival in the region.
They also called for investment in the energy-related projects to materialize the dream of regional advancement.
These observation was made in a seminar titled, “Energy Cooperation in South Asia Commitment and New Dimensions,” organized by Saarc CCI in New Delhi in collaboration with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tariq Sayeed, former president SAARC CCI said that South Asia has 150,000 MW of hydro-power potential and 0.5 million MW solar and wind power potential but the region was facing with 50,000MW shortfall.
Expressing his views, Gireesh B. Pradhan, Secretary Ministry of New and Alternative Energy, India emphasized the need of a shift towards alternative energy, while Mr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, President Saarc CCI said that uninterrupted energy at affordable price was needed for economic growth.
Mr. P.S. Bami, President India Energy pointed out that 300 million people only in India had no access to electricity despite the fact that India had more potential of energy production against energy demand.
The speakers shared the view that the region needs collective efforts to transform South Asia into an energy efficient region.
Business leaders and energy exports including Mr. Kosala Wikramanayake, Mr. Subodh Kumar, Dr. Arbind Prasad, Mr. Mollah Amzad, Mr. Mr Ashish Khanna, Mr Nitya Nanda, Gyanendra L. Pradhan, and Mr. Kanwar Muhammad Javed Iqbal also spoke on the occasion.
