Karachi: Sindh government on Tuesday gave the nod of approval to an operation in the financial hub of Pakistan, Karachi, in order to deweaponize the city that has seen more than thousand killings in the current year alone.
The would-be operation could encompass the city’s greatest political party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Sindh Interior Minister Manzoor Wassan said.
He dismissed MQM chief Altaf Hussain’s reservations over the operation that it would target his party.
Addressing the party workers of Lahore and Rawalpindi zones via telephone yesterday, Hussain said that relying on false allegations, certain elements were trying to suppress the MQM in Karachi.
“Ninety eight per cent deprived people of the nation would protest against any attempt of suppressing the MQM,” he said.
With the talk of operation in the city for quite some time now, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Shah stressed yesterday the need to launch an operation in Karachi while speaking in a Senate meeting.
Shah said all political parties including the MQM and the ANP supported Karachi operation. He said government had to decide the method of action, adding that collateral damage should be avoided in the process.
