Islamabad: Department of English, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) in collaboration with Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, organized a 3-day international conference on “The Literary Present and the Postcolonial Condition”.
The inaugural ceremony of the conference was held at the Quaid-e-Azam Auditorium of the university. Prof. Dr. Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman, Acting President IIUI presided over the ceremony.
Prof. Munawar Iqbal Gondal, Dean Faculty of Language and Literature, IIUI including faculty members, administrative officers and a large number of male and female students also attended the conference.
Renowned scholars from Pakistan, India, Nigeria, England, Canada and North America attended the conference as contributors.
In the opening remarks Dr. Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman has said that socio-political and religious norms of the dominating colonizing powers not only command political and military supremacy but also do impress upon the socio-cultural values and religious norms pervasively and thus influence the entire socio-cultural and politico-religious structure of the colonized society.
He said that language being the medium of communication and inculcation of the ideas, concepts, ideals and values plays a very vital role in this regard. Before the British domination, Persian was the official language of the Subcontinent. Persian, a language having rich tradition of Islamic learning, culture and civilization had a deep rooted influence on the society through its various genres of poetry and prose.
Dr. Sajid ur Rehman said that when British became the rulers of Subcontinent and they changed official language from Persian to English, the scenario was changed. The change of language created yearning for speaking English rather yearning for speaking English more fluently than the English themselves. This longing for speaking and writing English through its literature paved the way for English values.
Dr. Sajid ur Rehman further said that this is the responsibility of English speaking and English literate Muslims to enrich the world with Islamic norms, values, culture and civilization.
He said that I feel proud that our faculty members of the English department are trying their best in playing their part in this regard. They have introduced syllabi which conform to our religious and cultural values. For this effort I congratulate my colleagues and pray that may Allah (swt) grant them more strength and vigour to continue and enhance this program.
Dr. Munawar Iqbal Gondal welcomed the participants and said that the purpose behind organizing this conference was to educate the participants especially students about Literary Present and the Postcolonial Conditions and to provide a platform to the researchers to share their finding regarding the current status of literary in the subcontinent.
On the first day of the conference calligraphic work of renowned calligrapher and pride of performance Rasheed But and Shamas ur Rehman were displayed for the participants of the conference.
