Colombo: West Indies on Sunday defeated Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final of Twenty20 World Cup 2012, thus becoming the champion of T20 for the first time.
The Sri Lankan team failed to chase a target of 138 runs and were bowled out at 101 runs with almost 1.2 overs left in the innings.
Jaywardene, who scored 33 runs, remained the leading run scorer for Sri Lanka accompanied by Kulasekra 26 and Sangakara 22 runs. The other Lankan batsmen failed to face the fury of West Indies bowlers and got out before entering into double figures.
The West Indies bowlers bowled according to their line and length and gave no chances to the host side to get to the target. Narine, who took three wickets, remained the leading run scorer for West Indies followed by Sammy who send three Lankan players to the pavilion while Badree, Rampaul, Samuels shared one wicket.
Earlier, Chris Gayle failed to perform in the final but Samuels replaced him by hitting 6 sixes across the ground. Samuels scored 78 runs on 56 balls followed by Sammy 26 and Bravo 19.
Mendis was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka, taking four wickets in the match while Malinga failed to make any impression in the match and gave 54 runs in four overs without taking any wicket.
