Manama: The highest court of Bahrain has confirmed on Monday jail sentences of nine doctors on the charges of having role in the pro-democracy protests last year.
Bahrain, a US-allied Gulf state, came under criticism from countries around the world since pro-democracy protests led by its Shi’ite Muslim majority were crushed by the Sunni rulers, Reuters reported.
Bahrain’s Court of Cassation has turned down all the appeals of the defendants, upholding the previous verdicts of jail sentences of up to five years, said Attorney General Abdul-Rahman al-Sayed, according to state news agency BNA.
A former senior medic at the Salmaniya hospital in Manama, Ali al-Ekry, was sentenced five years in prison in June along with eight others who were sentenced one month to three years in jail. The appeals court also acquitted nine others.
Two medics, who were sentenced 15 years in jail, did not appeal and according to some reports they have either left the country or are either in hiding.
Amnesty International termed the June decision as “dark day for justice”, with the US and right groups also criticising it.
