Hambantota: Sri Lanka easily defeated Zimbabwe in the opening match of the Twenty20 World Cup 2012 played at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota, Sri Lanka by 82 runs.
Due to the outstanding bowling by Ajantha Mendis, the host team easily wrapped up the slightly weak Zimbabwean team at 100 runs while chasing a target of 183 runs.
Mendis bowled his career-best bowling, taking six wickets for the loss of eight runs. Jeevan Mendis 3 along with Lasith Malinga 1 also helped Lankans to wipe out the Zimbabweans.
Masakadza 20, Chigumbura 19, Cremer 17 and Sibanda 11 were the four Zimbabwean batsmen to cross 10’s. The other batsmen failed to stand in front of the strong Sri Lankan spin attack.
Earlier, 44 runs by Sangakkara, 43 by Jeevan Mendis and 39 runs by Dilshan helped the Lankans to pile up a huge score of 182 runs.
