Islamabad: A special bench of the Supreme Court in its verdicts in Dr Arsalan Iftikhar’s review petition, has retreated the investigation of Arsalan Iftikhar Case from National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and handed the investigation to a commission.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Jawad S Khwaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussian on Thursday accepted the allegations raised by Dr Arsalan over the NAB investigations.
In the verdict, the court has hand the investigation over to Dr Shoaib Suddle. The bench also issued notice to Irfan Qadir, the attorney general, for influencing the investigation.
The court in its order said Suddle would have an authority of judicial magistrate. The apex court has directed Suddle to conclude the investigations within 30 days.
Following media reports that Dr Iftikhar had received between Rs300 and Rs400 million from Malik Riaz, the property tycoon, to influence judicial proceedings, the chief justice had taken suo motu notice and had summoned him and Bahria Town’s chief.
Dr Iftikhar’s counsel, Sardar Ishaq, while presenting his arguments before the court said that business tycoon Malik Riaz is an influential person in Islamabad.
Ishaq requested the court that a judge should be tasked to inquire about the allegations levelled against his client. Taking a jibe at Ishaq’s statement, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain said that if Ishaq did not trust anyone, should the court then call someone from abroad.
Responding to Justice Hussain’s remark, Ishaq said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is an objective organization, but the chairman of NAB cannot carry an impartial investigation.
