Oslo: Oeystein Maeland, Norway police head, has resigned in the wake of a report that suggests that Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik could have been stopped and 77 people might not lose their lives.
Maeland was appointed as a police chief weeks before Breivik brutally killed 77 people in Oslo in July last year.
“If the ministry and other political authorities do not clarify this matter unequivocally, it will become impossible for me to continue,” he said.
The report also criticised the way police responded to the incident and said that it took “unacceptable” amount of time.
“The attack on the government complex on July 22 could have been prevented through effective implementation of already adopted security measures,” the commission said.
