The Team GB trio—Simon Terry, Larry Godfrey and Alan Wills—have been soundly beaten by Ukraine at Lord’s.
At today’s event, the hosts were ranked eighth, and had enjoyed gold medal at the World Cup event in Antalya earlier this year and bronze medal in Ogden, USA last month.
Terry, a bronze medallist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, gave his team a chance with two tens and an eight with his final three arrows, but to no avail.
Ukrainian team—Hrachov, Viktor Ruban and Markiyan Ivashko—face South Korea in the quarter-finals this afternoon.
“We all went high,” said a disappointed Larry. “I don’t know if it was adrenalin pumping or what, but they came out and smashed it –223 is a good score, it’s around what we’ve been doing in practice. 212 is not our level so we need to sit down and work out what happened. It’s sad. I came here to win two medals and one’s gone.
“It was a good team performance. We did everything right. Practising’s been brilliant and everything’s been right apart from the match but it’s what happens. “Sometimes you don’t get it right. The Ukrainian guys got it right from the first arrow and it takes a long time to get adjusted. I don’t know why we were popping arrows high,” ArcheryGB.org quoted him as saying.
