Sana’a: Some unidentified gunmen opened fire on the car of the deputy director of the central prison in Taiz, resulting in the killing of the deputy director, one of his young daughters and two guards. Another daughter and two guards were wounded, a Yemen security official said on Monday.
According to reports, Taiz, the second largest city in central Yemen, was a focus of protests against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who stepped down in February.
“The gunmen opened fire Monday at Col. Saleh al-Awlaki’s car and another vehicle carrying his guards,” the official said adding that it was not known who the attackers were.
He spoke on condition of anonymity according to security regulations.
Yemen’s al-Qaida branch claimed responsibility for killing an American teacher in Taiz in March, saying he was trying to spread Christianity in the mainly Muslim nation.
