Nasa has unveiled the most high-tech Orion space capsule which will start its first mission in 2014 and will eventually be a part of a spaceship.
Nasa’s plan is to use Orion-style spacecraft as a replacement for the Space Shuttle fleet which ended operations in 2011, and to fly humans to asteroids and the Moon by 2025, and eventually to the planet Mars, CBBC reported.
Presently, the capsule in only a skeleton and will be finished soon before being put on top of a rocket for the first Orion test flight in 2014.
After building the capsule completely, Nasa will send it 3,600 miles in the direction of the Moon to ensure whether it can bear extreme temperatures and the pressure of coming back through the earth’s atmosphere.
Astronaut Rex Walheim said: “It is a lot different than the shuttle. The shuttle was a little bit bigger on the inside. It’s different technology too.”
