Rawalpindi: The 35th meeting of Tripartite Commission was held between military authorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and ISAF, on Sunday, Inter Service Public Relation (ISPR) a media wing of Pakistan Army said.
ISPR said that the talks were focused on border control measures, and mechanisms put in place to avoid untoward incidents on both sides of Pak-Afghan border.
“Pakistan Army contingent was led by Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. General John R. Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force and General Sher Muhammad Karimi, Chief of General Staff of Afghan National Army headed respective delegations,” the ISPR said in a statement.
The Commission provides a forum to raise and process contentious issues and facilitate settlement.
ISAF in its official release says that the meeting of the Afghanistan-Pakistan-ISAF Tripartite Commission is a key component of the international community’s engagement in Afghanistan, assisting Afghan authorities in providing security and stability while creating the conditions for reconstruction and development.
These are the first such talks in nearly a year and offered the opportunity for discussion by commanders and key staff on issues of tactical, operational and strategic importance including cross-border cooperation. This discussion also set conditions for continued discussions in the future.
As the ISAF and ANSF delegations departed, Allen said “I’m very encouraged.”
“Not only were these meetings a signal of a renewed desire of all parties to address important topics and issues, there was agreement these meetings are important to achieving continued progress toward our shared goals of a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Afghanistan so that Afghanistan can no longer be a safe haven for terrorists again ,” Allen said.
