Ashgar Khan case: Report reveals Nawaz took Rs50 million from Mehran Bank

Islamabad: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) chaired by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry resumed the hearing of Asghar Khan case Wednesday.

The bench also includes Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez.

During hearing the Attorney General of Pakistan submitted Interior Ministry’s inquiry report pertaining to Mehrangate scandal to the bench.

The report states that Nawaz Sharif, the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), had taken Rs50 million from Mehran Bank, adding that Younus Habib had incorrectly used the money.

On Monday, the Attorney General failed to present the inquiry commission’s reports pertaining to Mehrangate scandal and said that the missing reports could not be found.

The bench expressed surprise on learning the fact and ordered the Attorney General to submit his written reply in the matter.

Asghar Khan had filed the petition in 1996, accusing the ISI of financing several politicians during the 1990 elections to create the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and prevent Benazir Bhutto’s PPP from winning. The ISI allegedly dished out Rs140 million for the purpose. The petition was based on the affidavit of former ISI chief Asad Durrani.
