Karachi: “Book reading does not only nourishes the soul but rejuvenates the human intellect in probing things deeper, analyzing things, and provide guidance to people, to instances of life that they have not yet been exposed. This habit of reading enables the mind to think over objects of interest and help a person in making informed decisions.
“Unfortunately, the number of book readers is continuously decreasing which is an indication of scarcity of knowledge in future”, these views were expressed by speakers during their address to a seminar on account of the World Book Day.
The seminar was organised by the Department of Library and Information Science in the Auditorium of Faculty of Arts. Chairperson – Department of Library and Information Science – Prof. Malahat Kaleem Sherwani, Dr. Mehmood Ghaznavi – Department of Mass Communication, Shahana Jamshed – Playwright, Hashim Nadeem – Novel writer, Jalaluddin – Cricketer and other spoke on the occasion.
Ms. Malahat Kaleem Sherwani expressed her views and said that the reading culture has been vastly reduced. It is very unlikely that the habit of reading is becoming less popular with every passing day. Dr. Mehmood Ghaznavi highlighted that scarcity of reading habit in a society leads to less opportunities for its people. Formation of a complete family is difficult without the study of history, philosophy and literature.
According to Shahana Jamshed, a good book can change the mind set of so many people, it helps in taking the right decision at the right moment. The well-known cricketer Ms. Jalaluddin insisted upon the importance of reading for players and cricketers as well. Prof. Naved Sehar delivered the vote of thanks whereas Prof. Farhat hosted the event. A large number of teachers and students attended the event.
