Rawalpindi: A literate Punjab dream is about to face a setback as Punjab government takes decision to close down 5000 Literacy Centres, proving a crucial program for illiterate people to learn how to read and write.
There are over 8,23,000 students getting literacy training in over 5000 literacy schools.
Over 31,000 teachers are engaged in the imparting the training among the students for which they get an stipend from Rs. 2,800 to 4,000.
In the first stage, all the literacy schools will be closed completely across all the Rawalpindi division being run under “Parha Likha Punjab” program for which notification has already been issued.
About 172 literacy centers, and adult education centres, educating 5500 students with 300 contract teachers, both male and female, will be closed in Rawalpindi.
The Government of Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, has also notified to abolish vacancies of executive district officers in all 36 districts including their offices and all the staff.
Parha Likha Punjab (A Literate Punjab) project was commenced by former chief minister Pervez Elahi.
The project aimed at providing free education in these centres and admission was given to those students who were begging or working in different places like hotels, shops, homes and workshops.
