Lahore; Thought to be as one of the finest educational institutes of Asia, Government College (GC) University awaits a grant of Rs. 108 million from the provincial government of Punjab, the largest province of Pakistan by population.
The non payment has made university staff and teachers worried over their financial issues as GC University is trying to manage its own financial issues.
The university staff also looks forward to get 50 percent increment in salaries announced by the federal government.
Sources in the university said that the Punjab government owed Rs. 124 million to the university last year, but it paid only Rs. 10.6 million and the remaining amount is still not paid.
The stoppage in funds has put many uplifting projects on hold including house requisition for residential colony for the academic staff of the university.
“Other universities are paying Rs. 5,000 to teachers pursuing M-Phil while GC university is paying only Rs. 2,500 on account of M-Phil,” the sources added.
“Last year an increment of 50 percent was announced in teachers’ salaries for the teachers last year and recently 15 percent increment was announced but the government has failed to pay the increased amount.”
“The university is paying the increment from its resources making its financial woes worse.”
The university teachers demanded from the federal and provincial governments to pay the announced amount so that teacher’s community could be saved from disappointment.
