Karachi: Clashes between protesters and police entered fourth day on Friday as law enforcers tried to launch crackdown against extortionists in Lyari area of Karachi.
Unknown men wearing veils attacked police with petrol bombs. Police continued their efforts to disburse the people with firing teargas shells.
The clashes erupted Thursday midnight and were underway till the filing of this report.
Unknown men also resorted to intensive aerial firing. Sources said that the law enforcers have not been able to make heady in the area.
Lyari is considered a strong hold of ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). The PPP-led government has been facing severe pressure from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), its ally in the province and the federation, to launch a crackdown against extortionists, having safe havens in the Lyari neighbourhood.
On the other hand the government is being criticised by the PPP supporters in the area for the operation.
