Lahore: The Rector of Forman Christian College (FCC), Dr Peter Armacost, and the President of BF Biosciences Ltd (PFBL), Mr Osman Khalid Waheed, signed a memorandum of understanding at FC College today to initiate collaboration on establishing a bioassay and other areas of mutual interest. Also present were Mr Eduardo Bustamente, Deputy Head of Mission at the Argentine Embassy in Islamabad. The Embassy has coordinated the joint venture between the BagĂł group of Argentina and Ferozsons Laboratories Limited of Pakistan, the parent company of BFBL.
The 5-year MoU covers a number of areas of mutual interest between FCC and BFBL, including development of joint research by FCC faculty and BFBL and provision of internships to FCC students, providing students a greater opportunity to interact with industry.
FCC is one of the oldest academic institutions in the country and has a state-of-the-art science building. Its Department of Biological Sciences has nine research labs, six teaching labs, greenhouses, growth chambers and modern equipment. It offers BSc Hons degrees in Biological Sciences and Biotechnology and an MPhil in Biotechnology. BFBL is Pakistan’s first Biotech pharmaceutical company specialising in the production of biological compounds used in the treatment of Hepatitis C and cancer. Since starting production last year, BFBL has reduced the cost of Hepatitis C treatment in Pakistan by more than half.
