Islamabad: New Inter Services Intelligence chief Zahir ul Islam is taking charge of the premier spy agency of Pakistan in a time when it is facing some of the biggest national and international challenges of its history.
Military analysts are unanimous on saying that first and foremost challenge for Islam is to revitalize image of ISI in the country as well as to take measures to control alleged sprawling involvement of foreign agencies.
“The case of mission persons, ISI indictment in Mehran Bank Scandal and role of its Political Cell are few challenges that new chief has to deal,” they added.
“No political party can now openly favor the agency as its role in destabilizing political governments has attract a widespread criticism.”
It is also being alleged that ISI has played key role in popularizing of a political party led by former Pakistan Cricket Team captain.
The analysts say some of the toughest question new ISI chief has to answered are what would be future of ISI Political Cell? Will it continue its political role? How it would tackle its alleged role behind missing of civilians on allegations of terrorism?
“The list could further be increased by adding questions like what would be its stance on restoring NATO supply line to Afghanistan? How it would clarify allegations on missing persons in Balochistan?” they added.
Another challenge is to clear environment about killing of former Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in an American operation in garrison district of Abbotabad.
The analysts are of view that Zahirul would need a competent and talented team to devise any strategy to take on these challenges.
