Wellington: A Bluetooth application hooked-up with your smartphone can monitor your vital signs – temperature, heart rate and blood pressure.
The application could also cover sensors for blood glucose levels and markers for specific diseases, and enable patients to send data directly to their healthcare provider and receive timely advice.
Researchers Helen Zhou and Tim Roberts of the School of Electrical Engineering at New Zealand’s Manukau Institute of Technology, developed the microcontroller-based unit, the International Journal of Intelligent Systems Technologies and Applications reported.
The unit can connect to other devices via the short-range wireless system known as Bluetooth and so be connected with software on a smart mobile phone for health monitoring, said a university statement.
“Any medical instructions can be sent back instantly to the mobile users,” the team said.
They added: “Bluetooth and mobile networks enable wireless communications among mobile users, medical professionals and other healthcare givers in an easy, secure and efficient manner.”
