Moscow: Vladimir Putin is set to return to the Kremlin for a third term after claiming victory in Sunday’s Russian presidential elections.
Putin secured almost 64 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election, winning back the Russian presidency which he held from 2000-2008 before his four-year stint as prime minister, the central election commission said.
His nearest rival, the Communist Party boss Gennady Zyuganov, trailed well behind with just over 17 percent of the votes cast, but Putin was set to face the latest in a series of mass opposition protests against his rule in Moscow later Monday.
“According to the preliminary results, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has been elected president of the Russian Federation,” the head of the election commission Vladimir Churov told reporter.
Addressing tens of thousands of supporters in Moscow late on Sunday, a tearful Putin said the Russian people had clearly rejected the attempts of unidentified enemies to “destroy Russia’s statehood and usurp power”.
“The Russian people have shown today that such scenarios will not succeed in our land,” said Putin, flanked by outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev. “They shall not pass!”
“I promised you we would win. We have won. Glory to Russia. We won in an open and fair struggle.”
