Melbourne: Sri Lanka defeated Australia by 9 runs on Friday in the last league match in Melbourne on Friday, knocking out India of the Commonwealth Bank tri-series in Australia.
Chasing 239 for victory, Australia fell nine runs short in a match that went down to the wire.
Ten runs were needed off the last over with Australia’s last pair David Hussey and Ben Hilfenhaus in the middle. The first ball of the over saw Hussey take the aerial route off Nuwan Kulesakara, but the ball failed Tillakaratne Dilshan and Hussey departed on 74 and Australia ended up losing the match by nine runs.
Australia will now face Sri Lanka in the best of three finals with the first one to be played on March 4.
