Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday expressed displeasure over the delay in preparation of new voters’ lists and termed it in violation of the apex court orders.
An SC bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the case pertaining to voters’ list.
The CJ observed that the court had ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to complete voters’ lists till Feb 23. He remarked that the court would not take the issue lightly and the EC and Nadra would have to face the music.
“It has now become a fashion to violate Supreme Court orders,” Justice Khilji Arif Hussain remarked.
The chief justice said that it was not the matter of the apex court or EC and Nadra rather it belonged to 180 million people who chose their representative.
Justice Khilji said that the election commission should seek permission of the court if it wanted deadline to be extended.
Justice Chaudhry observed that the EC was an independent institution but not a sovereign entity, adding that the commission lies under Supreme Judicial Council.
The Supreme Court sought from the Election Commission on March 6 and put of the hearing.
