Karachi: World Cancer Day was held at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) at Hanifa Suleman Dawood Oncology Centre. Director SIUT, Professor Dr. Adibul Hasan Rizvi inaugurated the day activities and outlined the various services offered by the institute in terms of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brachytherapy etc. primarily to patients suffering from kidney, urinary bladder, prostate cancers and also other malignancies.
Dr. Rizvi stressed nationwide need of implementation of cancer prevention measures to curtail this growing menace. He reiterated the institute’s commitment in providing free of cost quality care with dignity to all patients. Dr. Rehan Mohsin, Urologist SIUT, hosted this program.
Prominent amongst these were Dr. Najeeb Naimatullah Consultant Cancer Specialist SIUT-Hanifa Suleman Dawood Oncology Centre (HSDOC), Dr. Adnan Zaidi Consultant Cancer Specialist SIUT-HSDOC, Dr. Amir Maqbool Consultant Radiation Oncologist SIUT-HSDOC.
The distinguished speakers laid stress on the beneficial aspects of preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer in initial stages before it manifests as a full blown disease. Cancer screening therefore is imperative and mandatory before the appearance of symptoms.
They pointed out Tobacco use, Paan, Chaalia, Gutka, Alcohol, Malnutrition, early childhood marriages, multiple pregnancies, environmental pollution, poor socio-economic conditions, obesity hereditary factors, certain dyes/chemicals/petroleum products as culprits, amongst other several causes.
The cancer specialists also highlighted the importance of seeking prompt and immediate medical advice in case of slight suspicion of abnormality. With particular focus on cancers of kidney, urinary bladder, prostate and testis, the signs and symptoms especially blood in urine, painless enlargement, unexplained weight loss etc. should be discussed with the doctor immediately.
