Basra: At least 50 people were killed in a blast in Iraq near the southern port city of Basra, news agencies reported on Saturday.
The provincial spokesman Ayad al-Emarah saidĀ theĀ blast near a shrine close to the town of Zubair was caused by a suicide attacker.
The officials confirmed the death toll. Reports said Shiite pilgrims were targeted in the attack as they commemorated the climax of Arbaeen, which marks the end of 40 days of mourning following the anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein.
