London: A study has found one in four people in Britain are obese, but most of these are in denial about the potential consequences of their weight on their continuing health. The survey, carried out by Slimming World, showed a quarter of Britons were classified by their BMI as obese, yet only 6% realised they fell into this category.
The poll of 2,065 people in Britain also showed that 75% of people in the obese category underestimated how overweight they were.
With over 60 per cent of adults in England and around a third of 10 and 11 year-olds being overweight, it is expected that over 11 million people in the UK will become obese by 2030. Such figures are causing concern about the rising costs of obesity, as well as associated conditions such as diabetes and heart problems, for the NHS.
