Karachi: Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, Director International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University (KU) has said that Pakistan is one of those countries where the burden of diseases is increasing at alarming rate. At least 2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese.
While visiting a free medical camp setup at Dr. Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD) on Thursday.
The free medical camp was organised by Diagnostic Centre of PCMD for regular and non regular staff of the ICCBS. All employees of the PCMD were allowed to take benefit from this free diagnostic service, including sugar test, cholesterol, uric acid, creatinine, B.P, on December 1, 2011.
Dr Iqbal Choudhary said that every Pakistani needs to take care of his health as Pakistan suffers the huge burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases in the world.
“In Pakistan, the prevalence of hypertension is quite high. It is estimated that over 50 percent of the population over the age of 50 is hypertensive,” he added.
Talking about the hazards of obesity, he said that at least 2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. Five out of 10 fatal diseases are associated with obesity, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer, he adds.
He said, “Diagnostics Centre was set few years back at Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research at a cost of Rs 25 million. The centre is now fully functional and presently equipped to provide the diagnostic services in clinical microbiology, clinical chemistry and immunology, clinical hematology and molecular pathology (fish).”
