Faisalabad: All the unlawful activities in the name of religion must be abolished and a culture of tolerance be created in the society to re-establish peace in the country
This was said by speakers including Parliamentary Secretary Tahir Sindhu, Nisar Barkat, Mehboob-ul-Zaman, Rana Uzair, and George Claimant. Naumana Suleman,. Kiran Afzal and Shafiq Sharif at a seminar on the topic of ‘Obstacles and resolve to Peace-building at local level’. National Commission organized the seminar for Justice and Peace.
At the concluding session, the participants hailing from different walks of life reiterated their commitment to promote tolerance, religious freedom, pluralism and peace in Pakistan. The social and religious harmony and is dependent on the exercise of principles of equality, non- discrimination and under rule of law, and above all the government should take practical and appropriate steps to promote freedom of religion and peace.
The seminar resolved that to ensure the political, social, cultural and economic rights of the citizens, broad based reforms are needed in laws and policies governing peoples’ lives. The speakers strongly condemn increasing incidents of terrorisms, torture and sectarianism and demand that call upon the government of Pakistan to take effective and practical steps to the implement rule of law and protect religious minorities.
Elements responsible for undermining religious freedom and interfaith peace should be brought to justice and appropriate steps should be taken to amend discriminatory laws, policies and biased social attitudes.
The government should speed up the work to establish an independent, impartial National Human Rights Institution according to the Paris Principles to promote and protect human rights and to monitor situation of the religious minorities and to redress the complaints in this regards.
They appealed the Parliament to demonstrate its commitments human rights in the form of a resolution that it would abolish all the legislation contradictory to the international human rights standards and will not adopt any legislation in future, which undermines the international human rights standards.
