Islamabad: The leadership of SAARC Chamber of Commerce have welcomed the dialogue between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Yousuf Raza Gilani in the sidelines of 17th SAARC Summit in Maldives.
The SAARC CCI termed the talks between both the countries a positive change in the perception of the political leadership Pakistan and India.
Annisul Huq, President, Mr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Senior Vice President, Mr. Iftikhar Ali Malik, Vice President and Mr. Tariq Sayeed, immediate Past President of SAARC CCI in a joint statement said that willingness expressed publically by both the prime ministers to discuss the core issues, bedeviling bilateral relations, is a positive reflection of their thoughts, which is drastically required to make SAARC as an affective platform.
Implementation of SAFTA in letter and spirit is based on the greater political will which has be demonstrated by Dr. Mamohan Singh and Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. The Vice Presidents of SAARC CCI, Mr. Md. Abul Kashem (Bangladesh), Mr. Pradeep Kumar Shrestha (Nepal) and Mr. Kosala Wickramanayake (Sri Lanka) expressed their hope that the 17th SAARC Summit would be a turning point in the history of SAARC. They congratulated the political leaders of South Asia for showing more commitment towards implantation of SAFTA , which would help expand economic cooperation and achieving objectives envisioned by SAARC.
Muhammad Iqbal Tabish, Secretary General SAARC CCI said that due to non-cooperation the region has been paying huge cost as country could trade goods and services of worth $ 16 billion in 2010, which was only 27% of the potential available.” Strict implementation of SAFTA would help increase in intra-SAARC Trade, which was only $1.2 billion under SAFTA rule of origin” said Secretary General, SAARC CCI and expressed satisfaction over the declaration of 17th SAARC Summit, which adopted several proposals rendered by SAARC CCI.
