Moscow: Russia on Wednesday has disallowed new sanctions against Iran, despite a UN report that says Tehran may be trying to develop nuclear weapons.
Russia has slammed a IAEA report that Iran has worked to design nuclear bombs, saying it contained no new evidence and was being used to undermine diplomatic efforts to resolve a standoff between Tehran and world powers.
Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov made clear that Moscow would resist the tougher sanctions now under discussion in Washington and Europe no matter what the UN report says.
“Any additional sanctions against Iran will be interpreted by the international community as a means of changing the regime in Tehran,” Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told Interfax.
“This approach is intolerable to us, and Russia does not mean to review this proposal,” he added.
“According to our initial evaluations, there is no fundamentally new information,” the Foreign Ministry said about the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report.
