NDMA to form disaster management plan

Islamabad: In view of country’s vulnerability to disasters, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is working on National disaster management plan and Multi Hazard Contingency Plan for minimizing loss of lives and property during natural calamities.

The country is vulnerable to wide-ranging hazards from droughts to floods to earthquakes to cyclones and suffering from a major drought for the last several years which is unfortunately continuing with varying degrees all over the country.

In order to deal with such disasters NDMA is working to establish National Institute of Disaster Management in the country.

Sources informed that government has provided land for this project however funds have not provided for the project. It is also told that this project would be completed till 2013 while NDMA would appeal to the international donors for the completion of this project. Experts from Japan would also provide design of this project.

The sources also informed that NDMA is working on four major projects including Multi Hazard Warning System, Contingency Based Disaster Risk management, institute of developing and capacity building of all the stake holders related in disaster management field and to establish National Institute of Disaster Management.

Besides this, NDMA is also formulating multi hazard contingency plan to forecast about the coming moon soon seasons in the country.

Talking to Online news agency Spokesperson of NDMA Ahmed Kamal said that following the prediction about disasters in coming years NDMA realized to establish Disaster Risk Reduction Policy and work on this policy would be completed till early months 2012. He said that UN would provide technical and financial assistance for this project.

Ahmed Kamal further told that United Nation is also providing funds to provide short and long term weather forecast system for meteorological department in the country.

He said that NDMA is working in collaboration with different international organizations regarding disaster management in the country and in this regard NDMA is devising a plan with the Japanese government which would be completed in different phases.

The spokesman said that we are working on different projects to provide training to different organizations regarding disaster management in the country.

He said that NDMA has not sufficient funds for the development projects however in this regard response from international donors is satisfactory.
