Sirte: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the slain Libyan leader, and Libya’s former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi propose to give up to the International Criminal Court.
“They are proposing a way to hand themselves over to The Hague,” Abdel Majid Mlegta, a senior National Transitional Council military official told Reuters on Wednesday.
Saif al-Islam is reportedly making his way towards Niger in an attempt to flee the country after the victory of the revolutionary forces.
Former Tuareg leader Rissa ag Boula told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he is being ferried by ethnic Tuareg rebels.
Sa’adi Gaddafi, Gaddafi’s another son, took the same route to Niger to escape Libya in September.
Saif al-Islam is wanted by the ICC for committing crimes against humanity.
There have been contradictory reports about the fate of Saif al-Islam with some accounts stating that he was captured and wounded when Sirte was taken by revolutionary fighters last week and others citing Libyan military officials as saying that he had laid down his arm.
Niger’s government has said that members of the Gaddafi regime seeking asylum in the West African nation will not be turned back to Libya without guarantees for their safety.
Gaddafi was killed in his hometown of Sirte on Thursday, eight months into an uprising that put an end to his 42-year dictatorship.
On Tuesday, Gaddafi and his son Mo’tassim were buried in a secret location in the country’s Sahara desert, Abdel Majid Mlegta said.
