“Subah Ho Gai Mamoon”, “It’s the break of dawn, man, get up! Be hurry before I splash a water-filled mug on your face. Look… How deep asleep you are… not inspiring at all…” Believe it; these words are not uttered at home rather they are routinely exchanged between pupils living at a hostel.
Shahzad has become habitual of these words as they often struck upon his ears that wake him up in ‘lethargy’. But it was Khalid this time, who brought Shahzad to the consciousness from his ‘make-believe’ world during the sleep. Khalid was doing the same with other fellows as he had unusually wakened up very early – reason exclusively known to him–.
This is the life of students at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro where pupils get up from the sleep, eat and hit the sack with exchange of amusing taunts that keeps them active throughout the day. Hostel facility at MU for students hailing from far-off areas is no more than a blessing that also provide its charm to foreigners in equal.
The University of Mehran has seven hostels for over 1000 students in the campus which are at walking distance from the teaching departments. As many as 20 percent of the students of Mehran University both including males and females are availing hostel facility. These hostels are equipped with necessary facilities including bathrooms, reading rooms, indoor game facilities, dining halls, T.V room as well as internet facility.
The students of Mehran University Jamshoro believed that hostel life provide them recreational and studious environment which others might not easily get without going through the phase. According to their account, they have much time to explore the boundaries of education and to enjoy hostel life as well. It all depends upon the time management, planning and determination.
Students are not only facilitated in terms of basic facilities, but the expenses charged for utilization of such provisions were equally affordable. What appears to be more scaring for students are their class assignments, given to them every now and then by their teachers. The other important thing is that the University has been exempted from load-shedding to facilitate the students. In hostel the students are the guest of administration where the host has to facilitate students with basic needs.
The students living in the hostels after having breakfast go to their classes and then visit the central library and thence flood to the central canteen. In canteen five different dishes each one coast on Rs. 50 are available for the students. A special chaat and samosas were also available in the central canteen
According to students the quality of food available in the canteen should be more improved.
In night the students get together in group discussion for studies and in chit chat with their colleagues in the lawn or garden of hostels.
A student of first year Metallurgy and Material Faculty, Asif, who live in Shaikh Abdul Majeed Siddiqui Hostel of Mehran University, told The News Tribe that he was living in hostels during school days, college and even at university level as all educational institutes he studied in were far away from his home. “I feel very comfortable to stay in hostel as it provides a conducive environment for study. The students share their ideas and help each other in studies,” he opined. The students could utilize their precious time in their studies effectively. He said, “In hostels we bump into people from across the country and dwell together like a family.”
Regarding facilities in his hostel, he showed satisfaction and said that there was internet facility available in the varsity which helped them a lot in their studies. He said that he lived in Sanghar and managed to visit home twice a month.
Another student of Industrial Engineering dept, final year, Abdul Khalid, said that he had been living in the hostel for the last four years. While sharing his experience of hostel life, he said that students living in hostels could save their precious time and money they had to incur on house rent etc.

He said that there were three students living in a room. “We live, eat, study, and spend leisure time together. In hostel our seniors also help us in studies and give tuition to the juniors free of cost,” he added.
Regarding recreational and sporting activities in the hostel he said that inter-hostels cricket tournament was organized after every three months as well as other sports like Football, Tennis and Volley Ball were also played in the varsity.
Shabbir Ahmed, student of Civil Engineering department and resident of Tando Mohammad Khan, while sharing his experience about hostel life said that in hostel the students could study better than home as students get more time to polish their skill and potential fully.
