Karachi: The unusual high prices of sacrificial animals amid reported smuggling of animals to Iran and Afghanistan and widespread losses to livestock during the recent floods in Sindh have compelled more people to opt for collective sacrifice of animal this Eidul Azha.
Owing to rising inflation that has squeezed the purchasing power of the common man, people are finding it difficult to perform the religious obligation of sacrificing animals on Eidul Azha to commemorate the great sacrifice by Hazrat Ibrahim (AS).
In the wake of the increasing prices of animal, the trend of collective sacrifice has gained popularity among Karachiites during the last few years. But this year, many people who used to prefer individual sacrifice are compelled to go for collective sacrifice due to unusually high prices of sacrificial animals.
Many people interviewed by The News Tribe said that they were no longer in a position to sacrifice animal individually due to high prices of sacrificial animals and their shrinking purchasing power.
They said they would be performing their religious obligation this year by participating in the collective sacrifice of animal, which is arranged by many welfare and religious organizations in the city for the convenience of the believers.
Traders say that the prices of sacrificial animals were very high this year mainly due to animals’ smuggling to neighboring Iran and Afghanistan. Besides smuggling, they say, the price hike has also been caused by widespread losses to livestock sector in Sindh by the recent floods.
A trader, Ahmed, says this year sacrificial animals are available at more than double the last year’s prices. The asking rate of a healthy goat and sheep starts from Rs20,000, which was Rs10,000 to Rs14,000 last year. Similarly, a healthy bull is available in the range of Rs60,000 to Rs70,000 compared to Rs40,000 last year.
