Mogadishu: A US drone attack on Wednesday killed at least 46 civilians and wounded dozens other in southern Somalia near the border with Kenya.
The US drone attack struck Musa Haji district in Lower Juba region, and left 46 civilians dead and 37 more injured.
Medical sources were taken to hospitals in Kismayo, capital of the Lower Juba region and a port city located some 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of Mogadishu, for treatment.
Meanwhile, Colonel Mahad, a Somali military official, said that 90 members of al-Shabab militant group were also injured in aerial attacks targeting al-Shabab bases in the area. Twenty-four al-Shabab fighters later succumbed to their injuries, Press TV reported.
Somalia has been without a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
Strategically located in the Horn of Africa, Somalia remains one of the countries generating the highest number of refugees and internally displaced persons in the world.
