Mogadishu: A powerful bomb blast has killed at least 16 people near Somalia’s Foreign Ministry in the capital city of Mogadishu on Tuesday, military officials said.
The explosion took place outside the ministry’s building on Tuesday, Somali military officer Abdi Shakur said.
Several people also received injuries in the blast.
The death toll may rise as many of the injured are in critical condition.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing.
The developments come after Kenya launched military operations in southern Somalia against al-Shabab fighters on Sunday.
According to reports, the explosion occurred several miles from where the meetings took place.
Earlier this month, a similar explosion shook a compound housing several government ministries in Mogadishu, killing more than 70 people.
The African state has not had a functioning government since 1991 when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
