Karachi: Who will be the next chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is the most important question being asked in the cricket circles of the country. Every day a new name comes out on screen as a candidate for this post. After ex president National Bank Ali Raza, the name of Zaka Ashraf, currently the president of Zarai Taraqyati Bank Limited (ZTBL), has emerged.
A very highly placed source in the President House told The News Tribe that although the President does not have time to see this matter, but his advisors and other authorities are making a list of those who can run cricket affairs. The list currently includes some ex cricketers and some bankers too.
The incumbent Chairman PCB Ejaz Butt will leave the position after the end of ICC executive committee meeting which is going to held on Monday in Dubai. He has sought extension on the pretext that there are a lot of matters which he says he can handle batter, says a source. “I know much about these matters. If a new chairman takes charge now, it can be harmful for Pakistan cricket.” Butt has denied that he sought an extension.
Ashraf is one of the closest friends of President Asif Ali Zardari and is also a member of PPP’s central executive committee. Ashraf was appointed president and chief executive of ZTBL by PPP in 2008. The man from Bahawalpur has also been the chairman of Pakistan Sugar Mills Association.
