Washington: Chairman US Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Admiral Mike Mullen has accused Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of supporting Haqqani Network to wage proxy war in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Mullen said Pakistan has to shift the approach in future.”The ISI must end proxy war in Afghanistan” he added.
In a speech to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace on Tuesday, he alleged the ISI has been using proxies for years. Terming the relations with the Islamic nuclear power as important he said that abandoning Pakistan in the past was main reason behind the current situation.
The relations between the United States and Pakistan strained after the US raid in the South Asian country that laid to killing of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.
The US has long pressed Pakistan to go after the Haqqani network, a strong faction of the Afghan Taliban , largely believed to be based in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region.
US believes that Pakistan deliberately avoids to go after Haqqanis to secure a stake in Afghanistan after the US drawdown.
