Colombo: Australia was leading by 52 runs with seven wickets in hand when the play ended on the fourth day of the third test against Sri Lanka.
It was thanks to Hughes’ unbeaten 122 that the Australians managed to erase the hosts lead and build up their own. None of his first three partners could stay with him for long. Watson departed after making 21, Marsh 18 and Ponting 28. Clarke was not out on 8 with Hughes.
Herath claimed all three wickets while his fellows failed miserably. Sri Lankan bowlers will have to do something extraordinary on Tuesday if they want their team to square the series.
Earlier, Sri Lanka resumed their batting at 428 for 6 and were all out for 473. Angelo Matthews scored 105.
