What are the ulema doing? The question comes to my mind whenever there are killings in Karachi on the basis of ethnicity. Why are the ulema not preventing people from killing each other?
Isn’t it their job to tell Muslims not to kill each other? Does their job finish after leading prayers in mosques? Is it their only job to tell people how to say their prayers rightly? Won’t they be asked on the day of judgment why they did not tell the people it is against Islam to kill anybody without a lawful procedure?
I think ulema are also to blame for what we are witnessing in Karachi. Why do they keep away from these things? Aren’t these killings against Islam? If they are and surely they are, why don’t they do something? The supporters of these political parties that are killing each others’ workers and innocent citizens attend prayers in mosques. Don’t they? Then why don’t the ulema say anything in their sermons? Why don’t they tell people to stop supporting parties that base their politics on ethnicity?
Ulema will have to wake up from their slumber if Karachi is to regain its past glory. They will have to play their due part in stopping this bloodshed. The government is not doing anything. The learned must do what they can.
